Montenegro is known as the “Black Mountain,” a name derived from its mountainous landscape.

The name “Montenegro” comes from the Italian “Monte Nero,” which translates to “Black Mountain” and is a nod to the dark, forested mountains that dominate the country’s terrain.

In this guide, we will dive into the must-see places, travel tips, and reasons why Montenegro is quickly becoming a top travel destination. From the stunning coastal towns that offer breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea to the towering peaks of the Dinaric Alps, Montenegro has something for every traveler. You will find charming historical towns like Kotor, with its medieval architecture and vibrant culture, as well as pristine beaches perfect for relaxation. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the rugged landscapes of Durmitor National Park, where hiking, biking, and water sports await. The local cuisine, rich in flavours and tradition, will tantalise your taste buds, and the warm hospitality of Montenegrins will make you feel right at home. Keep reading to uncover why Montenegro should be your next vacation spot!

Day 1: Kotor – A Perfect Blend of Adventure and History

🏨 Check in to your Hotel

I recommend the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort for its breathtaking location, proximity to Kotor, luxurious accommodation, high-quality amenities, epic room views, infinity pool, spa and wellness centre. It is the perfect place to relax by the crystal-clear waters of Boka Bay. Head down to their beach area for a refreshing swim and take in the mind-blowing views. The perfect way to recharge before the evening.

🐈‍⬛ Explore Kotor Old Town

Start your journey in Old Town Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its winding cobbled streets, ancient churches, and vibrant squares.

Take your time to wander around this charming medieval town. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, walk along the city walls and roam around Kotor’s quaint alleyways that are filled with cafés, restaurants, and shops. If you are interested in finding out more about Old Town Kotor as you walk around, I suggest that you book a guided walking tour. My recommendation for a wonderful and knowledgeable guide is Elizabeta Krivokapic.

🏰 Challenge Yourself by Climbing the Kotor Fortress

For those seeking a bit of a challenge, hike up to the Kotor Fortress (known as San Giovanni Fortress). You will need to make your way to the North Gate, also known as the Main Gate in order to start the climb. The 1,350 steps may sound daunting, but the views from the top are absolutely worth the effort. You will be rewarded with panoramic views of Kotor Old Town and the majestic Boka Bay. While it is possible to hike up in sandals and open toe shoes, I recommend that you wear a comfortable pair of closed shoes/trainers. The pathway is divided down the middle, on one side you have a narrow cobbled path and/or steps and on the other half uneven loose gravel/rocky terrain. As you hike up there are various points at which you can rest and take in the views. Be mindful that the surface can become very slippery when wet, so make sure to keep an eye on the weather as it can turn very quickly and you do not want to be caught out as it will make for a extra difficult descent.

🏖️ Relax by the water of Boka Bay at the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort

After a busy day of exploring, head back to your hotel. If you choose to stay at the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort then head down to their beach area for a refreshing swim and take in the mind-blowing views. The perfect way to recharge before the evening.

🚤 Sunset Boat Ride with Barbarosa Boats

What better way to end your day than with a magical sunset boat ride on Boka Bay, operated by Barbarosa Boats.

The captain will come to pick you up from a suitable pick up point as close to your accommodation. The boat ride will take you through the tranquil waters of Boka Bay while you take in the stunning views of the mountains and medieval architecture. Make a stop at Our Lady of the Rocks and the Islet of Saint George to admire these historical gems before heading to dinner. This iconic man-made islet, Our Lady of the Rocks, is home to a beautiful church and museum. Legend has it that the islet was created by sailors who laid a rock here after each successful voyage, eventually building this stunning spot that you see today.

🍽️ Stroll around Perast and dinner by the water

Sail into the quaint town of Perast – go for a stroll and then enjoy a magical dinner by the water. This town is known for its picturesque beauty, Venetian architecture and maritime history.

Perast boasts some of the most wonderful waterfront restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood while admiring the stunning views and sunset. We had a 4-course meal at Hotel Restaurant Conte – I highly recommend their restaurant! Not only was the food amazing and the views absolutely breathtaking, but the service was fanstastic too.

Day 2: Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures in Montenegro

🌅 Sunrise Swim

Wake up early to beat the crowds for one of the most spectacular morning swims you will ever go on. Dip yourself into the warm waters of Boca Bay as you watch the sun rise over the peak of the incredible mountains in front of you. The perfect start to the day.

🚙 Jeep Adventure to Gornji Stoliv

Day two kicks off with a thrilling Jeep adventure with Go Baloo to Gornji Stoliv, a remote mountain village with traditional stone houses and cobbled paths. The Jeep ride takes you through winding roads, offering some of the most spectacular views of Boka Bay from above.

Gornji Stoliv has a history dating back to the Roman period with the area being settled for centuries, and remnants of its past can be seen in its architecture and historical sites.

Explore the Old Village: Wander through the cobblestone streets of Gornji Stoliv where you will see traditional stone houses.

Visit the Church of St. George: This small church offers a serene atmosphere and beautiful views of the surrounding area.

Hike the Surrounding Trails: If you love spending time in nature and hiking is your thing, the area around Gornji Stoliv has some excellent hiking trails. You will enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor and the rugged Montenegrin landscape in the backdrop.

🧀 Local Bites and Drinks at Noname Gornji Stoliv

After you are done with exploring, stop at Noname Gornji Stoliv for a traditional dining experience. Sample some delicious local Montenegrin bites (cheeses, cold cuts, local olives and juicy tomatoes) while you sip on regional drinks (pomegranate and wild cherry flavours are the local favourites). Sit down, relax and enjoy the serene view of the bay below you.

🚡 Take the Kotor Cable Car for a Different Perspective

Enjoy a scenic ride on the Kotor Cable Car, providing sweeping views of the entire Boka Bay. As you head up, the picturesque landscape of the bay unfolds before you. This is a must-do for anyone looking to see Kotor from a new perspective. My top tip – go during sunset!

🏎️ Ride the Alpine Coaster

For a dose of adrenaline, head to Montenegro’s Alpine Coaster. Enjoy a thrilling ride through the mountainous terrain while taking in the beautiful views. This roller-coaster-style ride offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape while giving you a rush of excitement. You can regulate your speed and can go as quick or as slow as you like.

🍽️ Dinner near Old Town Kotor

After a long day of exploring it is time to enjoy a much deserved dinner. Head to Ladovina Restaurant located near Old Town Kotor, which specialises in Montenegrin and Mediterranean cuisine. During the warmer months the restaurant has a focus on seafood (there are some grilled meat options). While in the cooler months it is a pizza restaurant.

Day 3: Cultural Immersion and Scenic Beauty

🏰 Discover Herceg Novi

Spend the morning exploring Herceg Novi, a charming coastal town at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. Known for its fortresses, staircases, and gardens, Herceg Novi has a rich history that dates back to the 14th century. Wander through the town’s old streets, explore the Kanli Kula Fortress, and enjoy the relaxing Mediterranean atmosphere.

☕️ Coffee at Gradska Kafana

Gradska Kafana is housed in what was previously a cinema, offers a charming atmosphere. The café is situated in a picturesque part of Herceg Novi which provides for the scenic views of the town and bay.

🛥️ Explore Submarine Bunkers, Mamula Prison, and the Blue Cave

In the afternoon, embark on a boat trip to discover some of Montenegro’s hidden gems. Explore old submarine bunkers from World War II and learn about the Mamula Prison, which has now been transformed into a luxury hotel. Afterward, be mesmerized by the stunning Blue Cave, where you can go for a swim in its vibrant, crystal-clear waters.

🐟 Konoba Skver

For lunch head to Konoba Skver for a truly authentic dining experience, perfect for anyone looking to savour the flavours of traditional Montenegrin coastal cuisine. It is located in the heart of Herceg Novi, right by the waterfront where it provides a charming seaside setting. It is known for its fresh seafood, including daily catches straight from the Adriatic Sea. Their dishes taste like homemade food, something delicious that your grandma would cook up, but are served with flare. Their focus is on using and heroing fresh local ingredients. The incredible food combined with the warm and attentive service provide for an unforgettable dining experience.

🏰 Stroll around Herceg Novi

Enjoy an ice cream while taking a relaxing stroll along the marina.

🥘 Dinner at Catovica Mlini

For dinner, head to the serene restaurant Catovica Mlini. Nestled in an old mill, this restaurant offers an enchanting dining experience surrounded by lush greenery and the sound of flowing water. The seafood here is outstanding and the ambiance is magical.

Day 4: Discover Montenegro’s inland beauties and those of Boka Bay

⛵ Morning Swim in Boka Bay

Start your last day with one final refreshing morning swim in the pristine waters of Boka Bay. The calm, clear waters are perfect for a peaceful dip, with the dramatic mountains towering above you, making for a truly unforgettable experience.

👑 Visit Cetinje, Montenegro’s Old Capital

Go on a scenic road trip to Cetinje, Montenegro’s former royal capital. Rich in history, this small town is filled with palaces, museums, and monasteries. Explore the Cetinje Monastery and visit the Museum of King Nikola for a deeper dive into Montenegro’s past. Lipa Cave

🧺 Picnic at Lovćen National Park

After a morning spent learning about Montenegro’s history, head to Lovćen National Park for a picnic. Enjoy a traditional Montenegrin spread, surrounded by nature. The park is famous for its lush forests, hiking trails, and the Njegoš Mausoleum, a significant cultural landmark.

(Sorry, no photos to share of this experience. While we had this planned as part of our trip, we were not able to go ahead with the plans. Unfortunately, despite everything being ready and set up to go the weather had other ideas. Just as we made it to the spot and saw the beautiful set up, it started pouring rain and everything had to be dissembled very quickly. If my photos from the other activities I have shared have built even the tiniest bit of trust in what I am sharing, trust me when I say it was a beautiful picnic setup in an enchanting clearing in Lovćen National Park.)

If you want to see a bit of behind the scenes from this day, head to my Montenegro highlight on my Instagram to see us fleeing the scene as the rain started to pour.

🧖‍♀️ Spa Afternoon at the Hotel

After an adventurous day, unwind with a relaxing spa evening at your hotel. Treat yourself to a massage or enjoy the wellness facilities as you prepare for your final day of exploring Montenegro. For the cooler days and months, the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort have heated indoor pools!
